What is lip filler

Lip filler is a minimally invasive aesthetic medicine treatment that, through the injection of hyaluronic acid, improves the appearance of the lips by adding volume, structure, and shape, while maintaining a natural look that is harmonious with the face and appropriate for the patient’s age.

Hyaluronic acid is biocompatible and reabsorbable, as it is a substance naturally present in our body, which assimilates and metabolizes it with great ease and speed.

Why get lip filler?

Volume enhancement for thin lips or lips that have lost volume with age

Contour definition to improve the shape and definition of the lip border and Cupid’s bow

Correction of asymmetries to balance the upper and lower lip or correct differences between the right and left sides

Hydration and firmness improves lip texture and hydration

Smoothing of wrinkles reduces fine lines around the mouth by hydrating and revitalizing them

Contraindications for lip filler

Lip filler has some contraindications, common to any minimally invasive procedure.

It is not recommended for:

  • pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • individuals under 18 years of age
  • patients with known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid, allergy to lidocaine, or autoimmune diseases
  • people prone to developing hypertrophic scars or keloids
  • people with infections or inflammation (such as herpes, acne, etc.) in the areas to be treated
  • people taking antiplatelet drugs (e.g. ASA) should not be treated without the opinion of their primary care physician
  • people who have previously had permanent fillers in the area to be treated
  • areas showing inflammatory processes and/or infections (e.g. acne, herpes)
  • people who have undergone laser therapy, chemical peels, dermabrasion, or mesotherapy
Lip filler treatment phases: how it works

Initial consultation: needs are assessed together and the treatment is planned

Local anesthesia: an anesthetic cream is applied to reduce discomfort.

Hyaluronic acid injection: the hyaluronic acid gel is injected using very fine needles, with an appropriate and precise technique.

Massage and result evaluation: the dentist gently massages to evenly distribute the product

Duration: the session lasts approximately 30 minutes.

How long does the effect last?

The effects last on average between 6 and 9 months, but this may vary depending on lifestyle, metabolism, and individual patient characteristics.

In some patients, the effect may last up to 9–12 months.

It is therefore advisable to undergo a subsequent treatment to maintain lip volume and shape, which will result in a longer-lasting effect.

Is it painful?

It is not a painful treatment.

You may experience mild to moderate discomfort, which varies from person to person. In clinical practice, solutions are adopted to make the procedure more comfortable, such as the use of hyaluronic acid with integrated anesthetic and an anesthetic cream applied to the treated area.

Post-treatment recommendations for lip filler

It is necessary to avoid smoking, intense physical activity, heat exposure, or applying makeup to the area for at least 24–48 hours, avoid massaging, applying pressure, eating hot, spicy, or salty foods, and refrain from blood-thinning medications unless advised by your doctor, to prevent swelling, bruising, and infections and to ensure optimal results.

Relieve itching, swelling, and redness by applying ice for a few minutes near the treated area. It is also recommended to keep the lips hydrated in the 24–48 hours following treatment to speed up the healing process.

Finally, but equally important, it is advisable to avoid all facial movements and massages that could compromise the treatment: facial expressions, facial treatments, and massages should be avoided for the first two days after the procedure.
